Constable drowns while chasing cattle smugglers

DHUBRI, Oct 18 - A 25-year-old police constable named Roben Das died in the early hours of Sunday while he was out to nab cattle smugglers.

A press relese by the police stated that on Sunday at around 12.45 am, a police team comprising Jaleswar PP and headed by SI(B) R Islam, IC and SI (B) Jeherul Islam along with 17 police personnel laid an ambush at Char Kukurmora under Mankachar Police Station along the Indo-Bangladesh international border to nab cattle smugglers.

At around 1.45 am, a group of cattle smugglers were noticed on the bank of a pond. Das along with three other police personnel followed the smugglers and apprehended them, though Das drowned in the pond while discharging his official duty.

It was informed that after a joint search, the body of the constable was recovered from the pond and immediately rushed to Ghajarikandi PHC, where a doctor on duty declared him brought dead.

Accordingly, all legal formalities were subsequently conducted. The body was taken to his ancestral village Hathinapur in Barpeta district. Das was the son of late Khagen Das.

The DGP of Assam conveyed his deepest and most sincere condolences and paid respect to the deceased constable who died in harness.
