Conrad to move Centre for anti-influx measures

By Correspondent

SHILLONG, Dec 12 - Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today dashed off to New Delhi to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah to seek stronger steps in curbing influx into the State.

Sangma will urge the Union Home Minister that after the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Parliament, the State should have other measures to check influx.

The State is also seeking 100 per cent exemption of Meghalaya from the purview of the CAB. All Sixth Schedule areas are exempted from the purview of the CAB. But there are areas in the State capital that do not fall under the Sixth Schedule and so, the State is calling for exemption of these areas too.

The Chief Minister called on Governor Tathagata Roy at the Raj Bhavan last evening and discussed the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) and affairs of the district councils.

The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved of an ordinance with amendments to the MRSSA under which visitors to the State will have to register in the manner required under the inner line permit (ILP) system. The ordinance has been pending as the Governor is yet to give his assent to it.

We had a meaningful discussion with the Chief Minister, the Deputy Chief Minister and his Cabinet members on the two subjects. Further action will be taken with consideration, Roy said.

Asked how long he would take for a decision in this regard, the Governor said that these matters are very important and therefore, would require great deliberation.

Meanwhile, Sangma said the Cabinet delegation has urged the Governor if approval for the ordinance could be given at the earliest. He further stated that the Governor sought a clarification on the ordinance, which was provided. He asked if the ordinance would override provisions of the Union labour laws and others, which were clarified by Sangma and his Cabinet team.

Clarifications were to his satisfaction and we are hoping to get a positive reply from the Governor, Sangma said after the meeting.
