Congress wins LADC polls

AIZAWL, Nov 29 - A day after Congress Bhavan here was down with disappointment over the setback in AMC polls, the ruling Congress on Saturday won majority in the general election to Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) held on November 26.

Counting of votes for LADC polls was held on Saturday in Lawngtlai town. Of the total 25 seats, the Congress won 16 seats followed by Mizo National Front (MNF) which bagged eight seats, while one independent candidate had also been declared elected.

The meeting of newly-elected Congress MDCs held in the evening of Saturday unanimously elected VL Hmuaka, who won from Lawngtlai Vengpui constituency, as the Chief Executive Member (CEM) and V Zirsanga from Paithar MDC constituency as the Council Chairman.

The general election to LADC was held simultaneously with AMC on November 26. Of the total 45,757 electorate, 38,993 voters exercised their franchise making it a 85.22 per cent poll turnout.

The ruling Congress and opposition MNF had contested in all the seats. While the BJP contested in 11 seats, MPC and ZNP fielded candidates in two and one seat respectively. LADC, which consist of 25 members, is the largest district council in Mizoram constituted under Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
