Congress serves show cause to Mizoram Home Minister

By Correspondent

AIZAWL, Sept 12 - Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committees disciplinary committee on Tuesday served a show cause notice to the party vice president and Home Minister R Lalzirliana over media reports of his defecting to opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) and his silence about it.

Sources said that the veteran Congress legislator has been asked to explain before 3 pm of September 14 why disciplinary action should not be taken against him.

The sources said the Congress high command has taken a strong exception to Lalzirlianas non-denial of media reports that he was defecting to MNF and his failure to express his allegiance to the Congress party before the media or the party leaders.

The Congress disciplinary committee chaired by party secretary Lalpianthanga met on Tuesday last week on this issue. The committee also met Lalzirliana and asked him to express his loyalty to the Congress party in the Congress Bhavan on September 10.

However, on the appointed date, the Home Minister was attending a conference of district commissioners and superintendents of police, along with Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, Finance Minister Lalsawta and Revenue Minister R Romawia for the whole day, as a result of which the scheduled party meeting was cancelled.

Even though Lalzirliana was expected to attend Congress Bhavan on the next day, he could not do so due to illness, the source said, adding that his silence for more days has upset the Congress leadership.

Lalzirlianas continuous silence prompted the disciplinary committee to sit for the second time and serve the show cause notice to him, the source said.

Though Lalzirliana did not deny receiving the show cause notice, he refused to comment any further.

Owing to internal conflict in the Congress party, Lalzirliana along with former Health Minister Lalrinliana Sailo, were rumoured to leave the party and got offers from the main opposition MNF.

Lalzirliana has been elected for four consecutive terms from Tawi Assembly constituency (formerly Saitual constituency) since 1998.
