Congress retains hold in Dibrugarh district

DIBRUGARH, Feb 16 � The Indian National Congress (INC) continued to enjoy domain over Dibrugarh district, given that it managed to retain a majority of the panchayats in the district, according to the panchayat polls results.

The Congress bagged thirteen Zilla Parishad seats out of the fifteen which were declared on Friday and was leading in six more Zilla Parishad seats. BJP proving to be the potent rival of the Congress won two Zilla Parishad seats. There are altogether 23 Zilla Parishad seats in the district here.

The fifteen winners of Zilla Parishad seats which were declared on Friday include INC�s Brishtisaya Phukan (Tengakhat), INC�s Dipti Rabha (Hatibandha), BJP�s Bashanti Hazarika (Duliajan), BJP�s Daisy Rani Phukan Shyam (Bhadoi), INC�s Dilip Gogoi (Merbil), INC�s Diganta Rajkonwar (Naharkatia), INC�s Junmoni Gogoi (Namrup), INC�s Sunuka Hemrom (Joypur), INC�s Anu Changmai (Tingkhong), INC�s Shanti Lohar (Rajgarh), INC�s Rekha Munda (Pithaguti), INC�s Renu Sonowal (Khowang), INC�s Shenlata Harpal (Dikhari), INC�s Hem Phukan (Naharani) and INC�s Dipti Sundi (Sepon). Congress was leading in Barbaruah, Lahoal, Bokel, Dinjoy, Dikom and Borpather till the filing of this report.

Of the 93 Gaon Panchayat president�s post, Congress won 61, while it bagged 60 posts of Anchalik Panchayat member seats out of 93. Similarly Congress also won 501 Gaon Panchayat ward member seats, the maximum number, of out of 930 till the counting of votes held upto 7PM.

MORIGAON: Out of 13 ZPC seats in Morigaon Zilla Parishad, six seats were won by the Congress followed by the AIUDF which got five seats, while the AGP and CPI got one seat each as counting of votes ended here on Friday.

The AIUDF emerged as a major threat in minister Dr Nazrul Islam�s constituency, Lahorighat. AIUDF candidate Akrina Nahor defeated her nearest Congress rival Saikun Begum by a margin of 1,562 votes in Lahorighat ZPC. In Bhuragaon ZPC, Nur Nehar of the AIUDF defeated Anuwara Begum of the Congress by 1,028 votes.

The Koshtoli ZPC was won by AIUDF candidate Malaya Bordoloi by defeating Aruna Pator of the Congress by a margin of 725 votes. However, Congress candidate Shyam Das retained the Niz Gerua ZPC by defeating his nearest rival Jibon Bora of the AGP by 1,611 votes. In Doloigaon ZPC, Jyotshna (AIUDF) defeated Nilufar Begum of the Congress by 5,200 votes. In Moirabari ZPC, Habibur Rahman of the AIUDF defeated Sarifuddin of the Cogress by 1,068 votes.

In Dandua ZPC under Morigaon LAC, Congress candidate Phuleswari Das was defeated by AGP candidate Binapani Das by a margin of 3,280 votes. CPI candidate Lachit Medhi won the Bhurbandha ZPC by defeating his nearest rival Nagen Das of the Congress by 1,705 votes. In Charaibahi ZPC, Congress candidate Mukibur Rahman defeated Independent candidate Jaharuddin by a margin of 756 votes.

However, all the three ZPCs under Jagiroad constituency went to the ruling Congress. In Jagi Bhakatgaon ZPC, Congress candidate Bir Kumar Konwar defeated AGP candidate Moni Bora by 1,008 votes. In Mayong ZPC, Congress candidate Mamtaz Begum defeated Sikhamoni Mandal of the AGP by 2,188 votes. In Dharamtul ZPC, Congress candidate Ambika Tamuli won the seat by defeating Niruprava Deka of the AGP by 9,892 votes. In Chabukdhara ZPC, Congress candidate Gopeswar Bordoloi defeated Pradip Konwar of the AGP by 1,052 votes.

Out of 85 Gaon Panchayat president seats, the Congress won 37 followed by the AIUDF 25, AGP 15, CPI 3, BJP 1 and Independents 4.

Jonai: The counting of ballot papers for 15 gaon panchayats under 114 Jonai (ST) LAC ended on Friday morning. As per the results, the Indian National Congress (INC) has lost two Zilla Parishads and 11 gaon panchayats out of the total 15 spread in two ZPCs. The Sanmilita Gana Sakti, Asom (SGSA) regained both the seats along with the majority of gram panchayats and the bulk of gaon and Anchalik Panchayat members.

The SGSA candidate for Pub-Jonai ZPC, Usharani Pegu captured 18,362 votes and beat her nearest rival, INC candidate Jyotirupa Dang-Pegu by a margin of 2,025 votes. The INC candidate got 16,337 votes, while the BJP and AGP candidates managed to get 2,079 and 1,407 votes respectively.

INC nominee Karmuk Pegu was defeated by SGSA candidate Sansuma Basumatary by a margin of 7,177 votes. Congress candidate Karmuk Pegu gained 11,689 votes, while Basumatary got 18,866 votes. Another Independent contestant in the seat, Damboru Konwar managed to capture only 4,224 votes.

As per the results, the ruling party captured only four Panchayats � Silley, Kemi-Jelom, Jonai Panchayats under Pub-Jonai ZPC and Laimekuri under Simenchapori ZPC. The SGSA retained power in 11 gaon panchayats and captured as many as 12 seats in the 15-member Murkongselek (Jonai) Anchalik Panchayat.

Out of the total 150 gaon wards, the ruling Congress won 44 seats while the rest were won by Independent candidates including the SGSA. The Jonai subdivision in Dhemaji district is largely dominated by Mising, Boro, Sonowal Kachari and Deori communities.

Nagaon: Congress is going to control the Nagaon Zila Parishad this time also. There are 41 seats in Nagaon Zila Parishad and 40 results were available till Friday evening.

The Congress won 24 seats. The LAC wise break up is as follows: Lumding 3, Koliabor 3, Rupahi 2, Nagaon 2, Hojai 1, Barhampur 3, Samaguri 4, Raha 4 and Batadrava 2.

In Jamunamukh and Dhing LAC Congress failed to win. However, one result of Dhing LAC is yet to come. The AIUDF became the second largest party in Nagaon Zilla Parishad by winning 9 seats.

It has won 4 seats in Jamunamukh LAC and 1 each in Lumding, Dhing, Rupahihat, Nagaonand Hojai LACs. The AGP had to remain satisfied with 4 seats � 2 in Koliabor and 1 each in Barhampur and Raha LAC. BJP won only one seat from Hojai LAC.

Two independent candidates, one from Hojai and other from Raha also won.
