Congress list announced for Manipur polls

IMPHAL,Jan 8 � All the sitting Congress MLAs, besides two sitting opposition MLAs were given Congress party tickets for the Manipur Assembly elections later this month.

The list includes Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, two opposition MLAs Dr Ng Bijoy and RK Anand, both of whom were elected on Manipur People�s Party (MPP) ticket in the last Assembly polls.

The ruling Congress which won 30 seats in the last Assembly polls has announced candidates for all the 60 seats.

Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaikhangam announced the list in an interaction with the media here on Friday.

Opposition alliance People�s Democratic Front�s main constituent MPP and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have separately announced 14 candidates each while another alliance partner JD(U) has declared eight candidates. Recently BJP had also declared names of candidates for 12 seats.

The Manipur State Congress Party (MSCP) has announced to field 28 candidates. MSCP President and former Minister Y Mani formally distributed the party tickets for the second phase on Saturday.

The Nagaland based Naga People�s Front (NPF) has announced the names of 12 candidates to contest the Manipur polls from the hill districts.

So far, nine candidates including four from Communist Party of India, two from Manipur People�s Party and one each from All India Trinamool Congress, Manipur Democratic People�s Front and Bharatiya Janata Party have filed their nomination papers till date.

Rally: A public rally against the crimes against women under the aegis of Conflict Widow Forum, Self-Support Group, Christian Network of Positive Women, Domestic Violence Survival Group and Survivor Action for Human Rights was held in Imphal on Sunday.
