Congress bags Mangaldai, BJP sweeps Kharupetia

MANGALDAI, Feb 12 � The ruling Congress managed to bag the Mangaldai Municipal Board with absolute majority after two straight terms.

Congress candidates won in 5 wards of the 10 wards of the municipal board, thereby paving the way to form the body on its own. The BJP opened their account in the civic body by winning in 3 wards. The remaining two wards were captured by Independent candidates.

The results are as follows: Ward No. 1 � Smita Rani Das (Cong; 383 votes) beat Pradip Dhar (Cong, 316); Ward No. 2 � Bharati Das (Cong, 1,418) beat Gitima Das (BJP, 492); Ward No. 3 � Manik Sil Sarma (BJP, 547) beat Subrata Das (Cong, 241); Ward No. 4 � Maman Pal (Cong, 924) beat Premalata Bhuyan (BJP, 784) ; Ward No. 5 � Jahanara Begum (Cong, 684) beat Namita Chand Deb (AGP, 456); Ward No. 6 � Rumi Kalita (Cong, 543) beat Dipika Dauka (BJP, 442); Ward No. 7 � Mrinali Bora (BJP, 516) beat Sewali Devi (Cong, 488); Ward No. 8 � Jinkul Ali (Cong, 348) beat Rakesh Barua (269); Ward No. 9 � Girish Saikia (BJP, 281) beat Krishnendu Deka (Cong, 143); Ward No. 10 � Pratap Bordoloi (Cong, 294) beat Khanindra Barua (BJP, 173).

On the other hand, in the Kharupetia Town Committee, the saffron party clinched Wards No. 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8, while Ward No. 3 was bagged by the Congress.
