Congratulatory notes pour in for Mary Kom

IMPHAL, April 29 - Congratulatory notes continue to pour in from various quarters for ace Manipur boxer MC Mary Kom on her being nominated to Rajya Sabha.

The move is the greatest example of transforming India�s ambitious Act East Policy into reality, according to BJP Manipur Pradesh president and former Union Minister Th Chaoba Singh. BJP is planning to hold a felicitation programme in her honour, he said.

Extending heartiest congratulations to the boxer, BJP Mahila Morcha Churachandpur unit president Tinkhonei Haokip wished her the very best in her future endeavour and wished she champions the rights of women in Parliament and work towards development of sports among tribal women.

The Olympics bronze medallist and five-time world boxing champion was nominated along side five other personalities of the country by the Centre. The swearing in ceremony was held on Tuesday.

Komrem Union, North East India, a conglomerate of six small ethnic tribes including Kom, to which Mary belongs, besides Songthu, Sampar, Chaithu, Kilong, Karong, Phung Organisation of Manipur and Chiru Union, North East India have also hailed the boxing champion for her nomination to the Upper House.

Meanwhile, Mary Kom said, �It is an honour for me to be recognised and be given such an opportunity to serve my country beyond boxing ring.�
