Cong Working Committee to discuss Lokpal

By Bill

NEW DELHI, June 24 (IANS): The Congress Working Committee will meet here Friday evening to discuss the Lokpal bill and other issues that will prominently figure in the coming parliament session, party sources said.

The meeting, to be held at party president Sonia Gandhi's 10 Janpath residence, will be attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Defence Minister A.K. Antony and other senior leaders.

The leadership will seek the working committee's suggestions on the ways to revamp the government, especially in the backdrop of a likely cabinet reshuffle soon, the sources added.

The draft of the Lokpal bill, which is to be submitted to the cabinet by a joint committee of ministers and civil society members on June 30, is likely to figure prominently in the talks.

The government and civil society were divided, among several other points, on the issue of bringing the prime minister under the purview of the bill as they concluded a series of meetings on June 21.

Social reformer Anna Hazare has threatened another fast from Aug 16 if a bill acceptable to the civil society is not passed by then.
