GOLAGHAT, April 1 - Sharing their political preferences here today, several voters of various age groups at different urban and rural locations of Golaghat Assembly constituency admitted that Congress candidate Ajanta Neog is their favourite politician due to her simplicity and utmost dedication for developmental activities.
In nooks and corners of the town, besides several villages, Ajantas leadership quality was appreciated by the voters as they gave her credit for implementing various Government schemes and for practically providing basic amenities like drinking water, sanitation and smooth surface communication in the areas concerned.
A total number of 1,75,129 voters are eligible for voting in the ensuing polls in Golaghat constituency which returned Ajanta Neog for the last three consecutive terms to the State Assembly.
Besides, the well-paved roads, sports and public complex and concrete bridges even in remote locations of Golaghat are enough for any visitor to find something different in the working style of Ajanta, whose campaigns have witnessed mammoth gatherings during the past few days across the constituency.
However, some sensitive and politically alert voters of the constituency opined that the expectation of her victory by a huge margin may not be a smooth affair as BJP contender Bitopan Saikia recently received unprecedented support from many tea garden voters as the saffron party could attract thousands through alluring promises.
We expected her victory by a huge margin in the poll as she worked with tremendous enthusiasm for the development of Golaghat. However, it may not be a smooth affair though she is expected to be a winner eventually, said an elderly voter of Golaghat town.
But many young voters of rural pockets of the constituency said they were attracted by Ajantas personality and dedication to work, but not by the Congress party as a whole.
In comparison to the 1980s and 1990s, Golaghat witnessed more development since 2001. I cannot speculate about the victory of any political leader. As a majority of the voters are sensitive in this constituency, we can hope for conscience voting in the poll, said Kshirod Kumar Goswami, a socially conscious citizen of Golaghat town.
But the adjacent constituency named Khumtai remains difficult for Congress candidate Bismita Gogoi as BJPs Mrinal Saikia could play the anti-incumbency card effectively in most of the rural pockets, including several tea gardens through his door-to-door campaigning since the past several weeks.
Women in many tea gardens, including Halmira Tea Estate, Podumoni Tea Estate and many others of the constituency rued that they remained impoverished as the Congress did not pay heed to their their basic issues of educating their children properly and providing minimum healthcare services in the garden areas.
Most of them said they could understand the value of voting and therefore would exercise their franchise for change and overall development.
Asked about the development in the villages, many voters along the road and areas like Adhaar Satra stated that they witnessed development of the surface communication network and rural housing in their respective areas.
But we need more. Corruption has stymised development in several rural pockets. The people have suffered a lot from erosion on the bank of the Dhansiri, while most such affected families belong to the BPL category. The peoples representatives rarely visit the areas, they rued.
