Cong to launch stir against demolition drive in Tripura

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, May 13 - Angered by the ongoing demolition drive on the offices of political parties by the Tripura Government, Congress on Sunday declared it would launch a massive agitation from May 17 next.

Ever since the BJP came to power, it has been trying to implement Prime Minister Narendra Modis slogan Congress Mukta Bharat by unleashing terror, said opposition leader Gopal Roy.

Under Tripura Land Revenue (TLR) and Land Reforms Act, a structure more than 30 years old, even if it was set up on government land, cant be demolished or evicted. Instead, the owner gets right over the property, Roy pointed out while speaking to the media at Congress Bhavan here.

Giving details about the Act, Roy said there is a procedure to carry out eviction drive but the administration has not done it properly.

Firstly, the administration will have to serve legal notice to the illegal occupant before initiating hearing. If the person or occupant is not satisfied with the process, he or she could approach a civil court for justice, he said.

None of the provisions under the Act was followed by the administration acting at the behest of the BJP Government. Therefore, we will certainly launch a massive movement against the State Governments decision, he said.

Stating that Congress would not be wiped out by demolishing party offices, Roy, who is a lawyer, alleged that the administration has been demolishing 30/40 year-old structures. No positive thinking people can support this sort of autocratic decision by a people-elected government, he added.

Meanwhile, the demolition drive continued with 11 more offices of political parties being demolished in different part of the State triggering outrage among Congress leaders and supporters.

Interestingly, CPI(M)-led Left Front is yet to come up with any concrete decision as it is still in deep shock over the humiliating defeat at the hand of BJP.
