Cong to back AASU if it forms anti-BJP party

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 16 - The Congress will welcome any move taken by the AASU to form a new political party and if necessary join hands with it to ensure defeat of the ruling BJP in the 2021 Assembly polls, said former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi while addressing a press conference here today.

I will welcome it (if AASU takes such an initiative), he said.

Asked about the possibility of such a new party causing problems for the Congress by dividing the anti-BJP vote, Gogoi said, If necessary we are prepared to join hands with them. However, such a party has not yet been formed. Let it be formed first... Let a clear picture first emerge.

He said that even the BJP has an alliance with the AGP and the BPF in Assam.

The former Chief Minister claimed that no government can be formed in Assam post-2021 elections without the support or participation of the Congress.

He added that the BJP-led government has failed on all fronts, including economy and employment generation.

Gogoi added that the Congress is contemplating filing a PIL in the court seeking a judicial inquiry into the violence and killing of five persons in police firing during the anti-CAA protests last month.

We had demanded a judicial inquiry into the incidents of violence... Why no judicial inquiry has been held till now? ... We are thinking of filing a PIL on the issue, said the senior Congress leader.

On Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarmas comments in the Assembly regarding the cut-off date for detection and expulsion of foreigners, Gogoi said that the base year and the cut-off year are different.

Even if he (Sarma) is right, why are they now talking of 2014? Why not 1966 when that is the base year, Gogoi said.
