GUWAHATI, Aug 13 - The ruling Congress has slapped a six-year suspension on a general secretary of the partys Morigaon district unit for allegedly attacking a police party to prevent it from arresting a declared Bangladeshi national.
We have suspended Habibur Rahman Siddique of Morigaon District Congress for six years, said Anjan Dutta, president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee who was at Morigaon for the Tiwa Autonomous Council election campaign.
Siddique was, however, absconding at the time of filing of this report.
On Monday, a police party, led by SI Prasad Ali, went to Milanpur area of Morigaon to arrest Rustam Ali, who was declared an illegal Bangladeshi by the Morigaon district Foreigners Tribunal. A group of miscreants, led by Congress leader Habibur Rahman Siddique, attacked the police party resulting in injury to several police personnel.
Meanwhile, police arrested three persons in connection with the case.
The All Assam Students Union and several other organisations blocked the Morigaon-Guwahati highway for around 3 hours from 10 am in protest against the attack on police.
Several organisations have also come out strongly against the incident in which a Congress worker was blatantly aiding a foreign national.
