GUWAHATI, March 10 - The Assembly today witnessed noisy scenes � including a walkout by the Congress � over the Assam Education (Provincialization of Services of Teachers and Reorganisation of Educational Institutions) Bill-2017.
A large number of amendments were proposed by the legislators, resulting in a prolonged evening session before the Bill could be passed. The Congress staged the walkout when Speaker Hiten Goswami repeatedly cautioned Congress legislator Sherman Ali Ahmed who insisted on speaking beyond his allotted time as he moved his amendment proposals.
Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today told the Assembly that while there would be no change in the cut-off year of 2006 for provincialisation, the Government would appoint 12,000 additional teachers, including those from junior colleges, besides the 33,000 that would be appointed within a year.
Sarma said that the Government would not compromise on the cut-off year, otherwise it would lead to a spurt in schools that come overnight with vested interests. �This will lead to a social malaise,� he added. In another revelation, Sarma added that Assam had 48,000 LP schools � 10,000 more than the required number.
