GUWAHATI, Dec 1 - Following the Supreme Court verdict on the NRC issue on Thursday, Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia has urged the BJP-led government to set up coordination committees, comprising members of all recognised political parties, in each panchayat area of the State in order to ensure that the remaining NRC preparation work can be completed without any untoward incident.

Formation of such all-party committees is a logical precaution because the State government has repeatedly apprised the Supreme Court that there is a likelihood of trouble erupting during the final phases of NRC preparation, and it has also sought additional security forces from the Centre for this reason, he said. The Opposition leaders suggestion comes in the wake of the Supreme Court setting December 31 this year as the final deadline for publishing the first draft of the NRC.
