HAFLONG, Oct 10 - After the joining of five Congress Executive Members and four MACs of the NC Hills Autonomous Council yesterday, the BJP got another shot in the arm when two more Executive Members of the Congress Poudamin Jeme and A Jeme joined the saffron party in Guwahati today. Sixteen Congress members under the leadership of Somesh Khersa, former EM, also joined the BJP here, reducing the Congress to minority.
Mohendra Kemprai, Dima Hasao Congress president, said those who have joined the BJP are opportunists.
Dima Hasao BJP district president, BB Hagjer, on the other hand, welcomed the Congress members into the BJP fold.
It is learnt that a BJP team, along with all the newly joined members, met the Governor this evening and submitted a representation to dissolve the NCHAC immediately so that the present executive committee cannot misappropriate the finances of the Council.
Our Staff Reporter adds:
The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Saturday alleged that the BJP is indulging in horse trading to dislodge the Congress-led executive body of the NCHAC.
APCC vice president Ripun Bora alleged that though the Congress won 19 of the 30 seats in the last election to the Council, thereby emerging as the single largest party and forming the executive body, eight of its elected members were lured away by the BJP yesterday.
The BJP is now all set to form the executive body of the Council with the help of these eight Congress deserters, three members of the Dilip Nunisa group, five members of the Jewel Garlosa group and four members of the IPF. But cases are pending against the members of the Nunisa and Garlosa groups on charges of militant activities, murder, looting, extortion, bomb explosion, etc.
This exposes the political expediency of the BJP, Bora said. However, this in no way proves that the peoples support in Dima Hasao district is in favour of that party, he added. The BJP took recourse to expediency in the Tiwa Autonomous Council too. The BJP (three seats) has joined hands with the Aikyamancha (10 seats) and the Asom Gana Parishad (two seats) to form the Executive Council of this Autonomous Council, despite the Congress winning 15 of the councils 30 seats in the last election. This shows that the BJP is making a mockery of the verdict of the people of this Autonomous Council area, said the APCC vice president.
