NEW DELHI, March 13 The Mangaldai seat has been put on hold yet again, even as the Congress Party formally announced the names of its candidates for the Dhubri and Nagaon seats.
As reported, Wajed Ali Choudhury has been nominated for the Dhubri seat. He will take on AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal. Jon Jonali Baruah has been fielded from the Nagaon seat. She will take on sitting BJP MP Rajen Gohain.
The central election committee (CEC) of the AICC headed by party president Sonia Gandhi, met today and cleared a list of 71 candidates. Assam was represented by AICC general secretary in-charge Dr CP Joshi.
Meanwhile, Vincent H Pala has been renominated from the Shillong seat, while Daryl William Cherian Momin has been nominated from Tura in place of Dzenith M Sangma. Momin would take on Tura strongman PA Sangma, who is contesting as an NDA nominee. From Nagaland the Congress has nominated KV Pusa.
As reported, the AICC survey panel had selected State Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain to take on AIUDF MP. But following opposition from Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Hussains reluctance to contest, he was replaced by Wajed Ali Choudhury.
In case of Nagaon, the same survey had selected Jon Jonali Baruah and it was decided to take her views, as the Chief Minister did not oppose her candidature. As she agreed to contest for the Lok Sabha seat, the Screening Committee recommended her name, said sources.
On the other hand, Mangaldai seat is proving to be a hard nut to crack. There are three contenders for the seat including Kirip Chaliha, believed to be a nominee of Himanta Biswa Sarmas camp, Pranjit Choudhury and Pradyut Bhuyan.
The seat has been put on hold for now and may be taken up by the CEC at its next meeting, said a senior AICC leader.
