Cong MP against HD Sarma as NRC State Coordinator

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 26 - Congress MP Abdul Khaleque today called upon the State government to cancel the appointment of Hitesh Dev Sarma as the new State Coordinator of NRC.

In a letter to Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the Lok Sabha MP from Barpeta constituency alleged that Dev Sarma has over time shared various controversial posts on social media against a particular community and added that the officer is not a fit person to handle such a sensitive post.

Khaleque called upon the government to reconsider the appointment of Dev Sarma as State Coordinator of NRC. In view of the various controversial posts shared by Dev Sarma on social media against a particular community, it is not desirable to appoint such a biased person to occupy a highly sensitive post, i.e. State Coordinator of the NRC. From the various posts the bias of Dev Sarma is quite apparent and palpable. His conduct and views regarding the matter prima facie show a high degree of bias, Khaleque stated in the letter.

He added, Bias has many forms. It may be pecuniary bias, personal bias, bias as to subject matter in dispute, or policy bias. He said that in case of the NRC, he is concerned about Dev Sarmas bias against a particular community. As such, Dev Sarma is not a fit person to hold such a sensitive post, he added.

Khaleque said that earlier in November also he had communicated to the Chief Minister to reconsider the appointment of Dev Sarma to the post.

Khaleque further pointed out that since many people had questioned Dev Sarmas bias, he was forced to go on long leave and Babulal Sarma was appointed as Coordinator of NRC. However, now Dev Sarma is back and joined his new assignment. His joining will assume further significance as many stakeholders, including the State of Assam, have approached the Supreme Court for re-verification of many border districts of Assam. If Dev Sarma is in the helm of affairs there is every likelihood that the process of such re-verification and other incidental activities would be done in a biased manner, Khaleque stated.

The Congress MP added, Such anomalous acts may result in hardships for the common people of Assam and aggravate the already deplorable conditions. The whole process is now marred with various controversies.

In his letter to the Governor and the Chief Minister, Khaleque also enclosed some of the alleged controversial posts shared by Dev Sarma on social media.
