Cong making baseless comments regarding NRC: BJP

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 20 - The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the Congress of trying to divert attention of the people by making baseless comments regarding the NRC update process.

The NRC is being monitored by the Supreme Court. The State government has no role in it. Congress lacks issues. So the Opposition party is making baseless comments against the State and the Central governments, State BJP general secretary and spokesperson Rupam Goswami said.

The Congress had earlier this week accused the BJP of trying to use the ongoing NRC update work to polarise the people of the State on religious grounds for the sake of political gains during next years Lok Sabha polls.

Congress leaders had said there is a suspicion that names of a substantial number of people belonging to the religious minority segment will be excluded from the updated NRC.

Goswami said that there is no way that the government can deliberately influence the NRC update process or exclude people belonging to any community.

The Congress has always played the politics of appeasement. That has only led to deprivation of the common Muslims. Triple talaq is an example. On the other hand, our government has spent Rs 700 crore on minority development. We have sanctioned colleges for minority women. The Congress only sheds crocodiles tear for minorities, said Goswami.

He said the BJP believes in inclusive growth by taking on board all sections of society. We believe in the politics of development, whether for the majority community or the minority. How can Assam progress if minorities, who constitute one-third of the population, remain behind? And the minorities understand the reality, said the BJP leader.
