Cong leaders escorted out of Williamnagar for code violation

By CORRESPONDENT

TURA, April 26 - A group of Congress leaders were yesterday escorted out of Williamnagar constituency after they were still in the area after campaigning came to an end for the seat.

Following the incident, the National Peoples Party (NPP) has accused the Congress of violating the model code of conduct (MCC).

Congress leaders including Zenith Sangma, Winnerson Sangma and former MLA and GHADC MDC, Ismail Marak were allegedly in a house even after 4 pm on Wednesday.

The MCC clearly states that anyone who is not a voter of the constituency cannot reside, particularly politicians. We cant understand the need for them to remain in the town when even the Chief Minister and other leaders left the place as soon as campaigning was over, alleged Home Minister James K Sangma.

The election observation party was immediately informed about the presence of the Congress leaders.

We sent our election squads to the place immediately after receiving information. They found them in a house. The Congress leaders said that they were going to leave after having dinner, informed the general observer BC Burman.

The three Congress leaders and their convoy were later escorted out of the constituency the same night by election teams. It was a ploy by the Congress to try and gain some votes, alleged the Home Minister.
