Cong going through lean phase, opines Silchar DCC president

By CORRESPONDENT

SILCHAR, June 19 - Embarrassed with the humiliating defeat in the Assembly elections, veteran Congress leader and president of Silchar District Congress Committee Karnendu Bhattacharjee admitted that the party is going through a lean phase.

On the sidelines of a condolence meeting organised at the Indira Bhawan here to pay tributes to the APCC president Anjan Dutta, the DCC president expressed his unhappiness over the present scenario in the party.

Yes, we are going through a bad phase. There is lack of committed cadres in the party and some members are working at will, which is causing a great loss towards the cause of the party, Bhattacharjee said.

Asked about what could be the reasons for the loss in the Assembly elections, Bhattacharjee said the candidates who were nominated with the hope to convince the voters were complacent, which caused the downfall. The party became secondary in their campaign.

Interestingly, the district Congress chief hinted at a conspiracy by a section of the party members to remove him from the post of president.

On the other hand, the former Rajya Sabha MP hailed some of the steps taken by the BJP-led alliance Government and said so far, the Government has made positive moves for the greater interest of the people. They must keep the prices under control, improve roads and put a check on the law and order situation.

He ridiculed the statistics provided by the PWD regarding 86 percent portion of the national highways in Barak Valley being in good condition.
