Cong gains majority in Manipur civic body

IMPHAL, May 31 � Ruling Congress has gained a simple majority in the elections to Imphal Municipal Council in Manipur by winning 14 seats out of 27 council seats, State Election office sources said today.

Sources said the counting of votes which began on May 29 ended last evening.

They said Congress secured 14 seats while Independents got eight seats. National Congress Party got two seats while BJP, CPI, Trinamool Congress secured one seat each, sources said.

Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaikhangam said the local body elections showed people were still supporting Congress.

This election was viewed as important by political observers because the State Assembly elections would be held in early February next year. � PTI
