Cong forced Lapang out of party: Conrad

By Staff Correspondent

SHILLONG, Sept 14 - Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has expressed sadness over the manner five-time Chief Minister DD Lapang was forced to resign from the Congress party despite his immense contribution to the party and the State.

It is quite sad to see that Lapang was forced to resign at this point when he has contributed so much to the State and Congress party, Sangma said on the sidelines of a programme here.

He said that a person like Lapang who has contributed so much for the State and the people should have been given more respect and the Congress would realise in due course of time that his resignation is a great loss to the party.

Asked if NPP would embrace Lapang into its fold, Sangma didnt commit anything, but said that Lapang would be an asset for any party due to his vast experience and knowledge.

Meanwhile, State Congress has sent an emotional appeal to Lapang to reconsider his decision. Party spokesperson, Hima Shangpliang said that Lapang has always been a father-figure and a mentor for many and so everyone is sad and shocked at his sudden decision to resign.

Day before yesterday he (Lapang) addressed a gathering of party workers at Nongpoh. We had no idea he would take such a decision. We are trying to reach out to him to change his decision, Shangpliang said.

He further stated that efforts are also on by Rahul Gandhis office to reach Lapang after he sent his resignation, but he was not available at Meghalaya House in Delhi.

We will definitely meet him once he returns. Our CLP leader Mukul Sangma too wants him to change his decision, he added.
