TURA, Sept 14 - All Achik Youth Federation(AAYF), Eastern Zone, has condemned the fielding of non-tribal candidates by the Congress party in the GHADC elections on October 12.
The partys announcement of tickets has met with severe criticism after it decided to field non-tribal candidates in defiance of the demands of civil society organisations and tribals of the region. The AAYF warned that it would work against the Congress for its stance.
GHADC is an autonomous council only for the Garo community. We are opposed to the selection of Sader Hussain and Monirul Islam as candidates for GHADC election, said Tattara SN Marak, president of the AAYF zone.
Hussain has been nominated by Congress to contest the Shyamnagar seat and Islam for the Balachanda constituency. Protests have been held all over the Garo Hills region by Ngos seeking exclusion of non-tribals from voting or contesting the Council polls. Some Ngos have threatened to work against any party that fielded non-tribal candidates.
