Cong explains move on RS poll

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 28 - The APCC today clarified that because of the dearth of numbers in the State Assembly, it has refrained from fielding any candidate for the Rajya Sabha (RS) election this time.

Election to the two RS seats from the State was scheduled to be held on June 7 next. But, as only two nominations have been filed for the two seats, the possibility of an election to these seats has become remote.

The APCC, in a statement said here that 43 legislators are required to get a candidate elected, considering the present strength of the Assembly. But, it has only 25 legislators, 18 short of the required number. Hence, the party said it has refrained from fielding any candidate for the RS poll this time. Its effort to field a candidate from among leading apolitical personalities of the State for an RS seat also failed, the party said.
