AGARTALA, March 31 - Opposition Congress has called a days strike in Tripura on April 18 demanding resignation of Chief Minister Manik Sarkar for his alleged involvement in the assassination of former State Health Minister Bimal Sinha in 1998.

Following the report of Justice Yusuf Commission, which inquired into the assassination of Bimal Sinha, it is clear that Chief Minister Manik Sarkar was involved in his murder for political reasons, PCC President Birajit Sinha alleged in a press conference.

We demand CBI inquiry into the assassination and immediate resignation of Sarkar from the post of Chief Minister. A 24-hour strike has been called by our party to press for the demand, he said. Earlier, Congress also burnt the effigy of Sarkar.

CPI(M), however, ruled out Sarkars resignation saying the Commission has no charge against the Chief Minister.

Why should the Chief Minister resign? Did the Commission implicate him? Birajit Sinha himself had been imprisoned on charges under Weapons Act.

Now, he is bringing these baseless charges. People will not respond to their bandh call, CPI(M) spokesperson and partys Central Committee member, Gautam Das said.
