Cong confident of winning RS, Assembly polls

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 20 - Chief Minister and leader of the Assam Congress Legislative Party Tarun Gogoi once again exuded confidence of winning the two Rajya Sabha seats besides emerging as the single largest party in the ensuing Assembly polls.

Gogoi told media persons this afternoon at the party headquarters here that opposition parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) have resorted to negative publicity against the Congress party which, he believed, will instead backfire on them.

They are not going to gain anything out of it. By levelling charges of corruption and atrocities, they are pointing fingers at themselves. If the Congress resorted to such practices why did not they lodge formal complaints against it? As far as atrocities are concerned who can forget the infamous secret killings that took place when the AGP and BJP were at the helm of affairs at Dispur and Delhi respectively, Gogoi said.

He added that the Congress, besides winning both the Rajya Sabha seats, will bag more than 64 seats in the forthcoming Assembly elections in the State. He claimed that the response from the party workers and the candidates is pretty good and the Congress camp is upbeat about it.

Lashing out at the opposition parties, Gogoi alleged that both the BJP and AGP are parties without any ideology. On the BJP forging an alliance with a number of forces, he said, This shows that they are lacking in confidence about their own performance. With too much support, it will be difficult for them to walk.
