GUWAHATI, Sept 13 - While the issue of the reported ethnic cleansing of Rohingya people of Myanmar should be looked upon with humanitarian angle, there is no question of providing shelter to the persecuted members of the community in Assam, the State Congress party has said.
Vice-president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Pradyut Bordoloi, said on Wednesday that the Central government should also categorically condemn the violence being perpetrated on the Rohingyas in Myanmar, while at the same time ensuring that India�s bilateral relations with Naypyidaw are not affected.
�Even if India, being a signatory to various international treaties, has to provide shelter to the persecuted Rohingya people on humanitarian ground, they should not be allowed into Assam. The social fabric of our State is very fragile and allowing any more refugees to take shelter here could have serious consequences. If Rohingya refugees are allowed into India, they should be settled in other States,� he said.
Bordoloi said that the Congress party �unequivocally condemn� the atrocities being perpetrated on the Rohingyas by the Myanmar regime.
�While what is happening in Myanmar is despicable, at the same time we are also astounded by the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the matter. Modi is always so prompt in expressing his views over Twitter on all subjects but even during his recent visit to Myanmar he failed to utter one word on the matter of Rohingyas,� said Bordoloi.
He added, �During his visit to Myanmar, Modi could have raised the issue of violation of human rights of the Rohingyas in a way so that it did not compromise India�s interests.�
