JORHAT, June 12 - In order to gain popular mandate in the yet to be announced panchayat poll in the State, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and several senior leaders of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee(APCC) today asked party cadres to highlight the failures of the ruling BJP while implementing schemes which were promised during the political campaigns of the last Assembly election.

Addressing Congress workers at the District Library auditorium here today, Gogoi said that the BJP-led Government in the State did not fulfil the promise to deport illegal migrants, nor did they implement developmental schemes for the farmers and the poor section of people.

According to a recent survey conducted by Gauhati University, the level of popularity of the BJP Government in the State has come down drastically within a year of their functioning. They could woo the voters through various schemes during the Assembly election campaigns, but nothing has been implemented for the benefit of the farmers and the poor sections of people, opined Gogoi.

He criticised the ruling BJP for spending several crores of public money in the Namami Brahmaputra River Festival instead of repairing National Highway-37 and many other main roads where potholes have caused serious problems for the commuters.

I request all our colleagues in the Congress party to convey these failures of the BJP Government to every nook and corner of the State. If we remain silent during this period, people will not forgive us. We will have to raise our voice for the greater interest of the common people, Gogoi said.

As the Congress observed Protarona Divas here today, several other Congress leaders, including former Jorhat MLA Rana Goswami, Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, district president of the Congress committee Dip Gogoi, APCC general secretary Rajendra Prasad Singh, Barnali Saikia Bora, former Congress MP Nabin Buragohain and several other leaders attended the meeting.

Speaking on the occasion, former Jorhat MLA Rana Goswami requested all the members and sympathisers of the political party to highlight non-implementation of the populist schemes of the BJP which were published extensively in the newspapers during the previous poll campaign across the State.

The National Highway-37 connecting Jorhat and Sivasagar is in a very deplorable state. Commuters face serious problems while travelling along the highway. The State Government has not been able to fulfil the basic needs of the people, claimed Goswami.
