Cong accuses BJP of trying to browbeat media

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 21 - Opposition Congress today accused the BJP-led governments in the Centre and the State of trying to muzzle the freedom of the press and to browbeat the media. Addressing a press conference here, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora said that one Guwahati-based media house has been issued police summons for exposing corruption.

Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP) has stopped issuing advertisement to The Assam Tribune for the stand taken by the newspaper on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. If this continues, what will happen to freedom of the press? We demand an end to the BJPs fascist tendencies against the media, Bora said.

He added that Congress will hold major rallies at the home constituencies of four former leaders who recently defected to the BJP Bhubaneswar Kalita, Gautam Roy, Santiuse Kujur and Rajendra Prasad Singh.

We will prove that the grassroot Congress workers are still with our party. Those leaders have failed to take any workers with them, Bora said.

Lambasting the Central government over the ongoing economic downturn, Bora said that the ruling dispensation is trying to divert attention of masses with issues like abrogation of Article 370 and Triple Talaq.

The ruling party is whipping up war hysteria ... Already three lakh people have lost their jobs and in the next two months experts are predicting loss of another seven lakh jobs... Indian economy is heading for a Great Depression within six months period, Bora said.
