GUWAHATI, Aug 14 - Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modis latest statement regarding the NRC update process has proved that a large number of genuine Indian citizens have been left out of the draft document.
It is unfortunate that the Prime Minister, just before the Independence Day, had to give an assurance to the people of the country on the NRC issue. That means that the NRC authority has not done their job properly. They have done injustice to many Indian citizens.
The Prime Ministers statement clearly confirms that a large number of genuine Indian citizens have been left out of the draft NRC, Gogoi told The Assam Tribune.
He said that many genuine Indian citizens in Assam have been passing their days in anxiety and uncertainty.
Now the Prime Minister has given an assurance. Indian citizens do not need such an assurance. They have been given some rights by the Constitution. Nobody can deport any Indian citizen, said Gogoi.
He added, The Prime Ministers statement has completely exposed how hopelessly and callously they are preparing the NRC, despite the fact that it is being done under the Supreme Courts supervision. One can well imagine what would have happened if the Supreme Court had not been involved in the exercise.
The former Chief Minister accused the BJP of trying to create confusion in the minds of the people regarding the NRC issue and said that NRC and the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, are totally contradictory.
The massive work, time, energy and money spent on the NRC process will go waste if the Citizenship Bill is passed. BJP is trying to protect the Bangladeshi Hindus by passing the Bill. While they (BJP) may accuse us of being soft towards illegal immigrants, the fact is that it is the BJP which wants to give citizenship to the Bangladeshi Hindus, Gogoi said.
Breaking his silence, Modi had on Sunday said that all opportunities would be given to the people of Assam, whose names did not figure in the final draft of the NRC published recently.
Gogoi, meanwhile, added that the credit for taking the NRC update process this far goes largely to the Congress party.
BJP may now make lot of false accusations. They are now saying that Rahul Gandhi is against the NRC. However, the reality is that the NRC process was initiated at a time when Dr Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister of India and Rahul Gandhi was the vice president of the Congress party, said the former three-time Chief Minister.
