Condolences continue on Purno Sangma�s demise

SHILLONG, March 6 - Condolence messages continued to pour in as the State funeral of former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Agitok Sangma is scheduled to be held at Tura on Monday.

Former Governor (Assam and Meghalya) and Chairman North East Council, Bhishma Narain Singh in his condolence message said Sangma�s demise has brought �personal grief� as they had devoted long years together in the economic and cultural integration of Northeastern States.

Singh recalled Sangma�s public speaking and oratory skills to espouse and advocate the cause of all-round development of NE.

�I offer my condolences to Agatha Sangma, the inheritor of PA Sangma�s legacy as a crusader for rights and upliftment of Northeastern people,� the former Governor said.

Former Assembly Deputy Speaker Sanbor Shullai said that the Nationalist Congress Party in an emergent condolence meeting expressed its �deep shock and sorrow over the untimely death of Purno A Sangma.�

Shullai recalled Sangma as the founder member of the NCP and for his immense contribution to the party.

Pynshnainlang Syiem, Chief Executive Member, Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council in his message said that the country and the State �has lost a great tribal leader in the untimely demise of Sangma.�

Civil Society Women�s Organisation in its message expressed �shock at the sudden demise of Sangma. �His death has caused a vacuum in the State�, CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said.

Martin Luther Christian University in a condolence meeting recalled how Sangma brought Meghalaya and NE in the political scenario of the country. Vice Chancellor of the University and former Home Minister, Robert G Lyngdoh said, �It is a big loss for the State because he was one person who was known throughout the country. He was the face not only of Meghalaya but of NE.�
