Conditions of BOPs pathetic: House panel

By Correspondent

JORHAT, April 25 - Absence of basic infrastructure and amenities at the border outposts (BOPs) along the Assam-Nagaland border of Jorhat and Sivasagar districts were spotted by a high level team, belonging to the departmentally related standing committee on development (B) departments of State Legislative Assembly today. The team visited four BOPs, border roads and tea gardens in the bordering areas of both the districts.

The team of MLAs and senior government officials headed by BPF MLA Majendra Narzary took stock of the realities at the sensitive bordering areas that witnessed several incidents of crimes and the underdevelopment since several decades.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, a member of the team MLA Pradip Hazarika said that they saw the pathetic conditions of the BOPs which are yet to be provided basic amenities like electricity and drinking water. Hazarika said that the BOPs were established several miles away from the inter-State border inside the Jorhat and Sivasagar districts though those BOPs were to be constructed nearer to the inside of the border.

How can those BOPs protect our land? They are located several kilometres inside the Jorhat and Sivasagar districts, away from the inter-State border, said the AGP MLA.

He said that all the findings will be informed to the authorities concerned so that they can take up measures for improvement of the BOPs.

Another senior member of the team, MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita said that condition of many roads along the bordering areas is pathetic, which should be developed by the government.

Taking stock of the availability of proper health services and the living condition at many tea gardens at Amguri, Gabhoru and Mariyani areas, some members of the team said that workers of those gardens are yet to get the basic facilities for healthy living.

We will discuss all those matters before submitting a report. The development of bordering areas will be possible after proper examination of those problems, said MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita. The team also examined the availability of food, road connectivity of the BOPs along the border.

After their visit to the bordering areas and jails of both the districts, the team is scheduled to visit the sensitive bordering areas of Golaghat district on Wednesday. BJP MLAs Ashok Kumar Singh, Suman Haripriya, Dipak Kumar Rabha, Ashok Sarma and the BPFs Kamal Sing Narzary and many other MLAs also were a part of the team.
