GUWAHATI, June 5 - Voicing concern over the transfer of administrative control of the SBI Commercial Branch (CB), Guwahati, from the local head office, Guwahati, to the administrative control of the Corporate Customers Group (CCG), Kolkata regional office (RO), the FINER said that the change would be detrimental to the interests of bank customers of the Northeast and would have serious ramifications on the growth of business and industry in the region as well.

The SBI has been the biggest facilitator and played a pivotal role in the economic development of the region. This has been possible primarily due the commitment of the officials who had deep understanding of the local needs, culture and uniqueness of the region, FINER said in a statement.

The Commercial Branch of SBI in Guwahati was opened in 2004 as a result of sustained efforts of bank customers and representations to the then governments for having focused industrial banking facilities in the region. The CB Guwahati, which is the SBIs largest branch in terms of business in the Northeast, has since rendered focused solution to a wide range of credit needs of businesses in the region, it pointed out.

FINER said that the North East circle of SBI and its Commercial Branch have performed well under the leadership of stalwarts like Rajnish Kumar, OP Bhatt and others who have contributed immensely to take the circle to a higher growth trajectory providing support to a wide array of projects, both large and medium scale.

In a recent development, the SBI had moved the administrative reporting control of its premier business branch in the region, i.e., Commercial Branch, Guwahati, from the local head office, Guwahati (headed by CGM), to under the CCG-RO, Kolkata, headed by a GM with effect from June 1, 2020. This has caused concern among the business fraternity who fear that their legitimate interests would be undermined in the process.

The FINER said it has taken up the issue with the bank officials, the Government of Assam, the SBI and the Union Ministry of Finance with a request to address these concerns.
