Concern over spurt in rhino poaching

By Correspondent

MORIGAON, Nov 12 Several nature organisations here have expressed serious concern over the latest rhino-killing in Pabitora Wildlife sanctuary. The Pabitora sanctuary which had a record of zero-poaching for several years witnessed rhino-killing this year.

On June 11, a gang of poachers killed an adult rhino and took away its horn. Subsequently, forest officials and police arrested a Congress leader involved in the crime. But according to allegation of local people, the guilty persons went scot-free due to political pressure exerted by a local minister.

On October 12, another rhino was killed by poachers. Police and forest-staff nabbed two poachers and recovered a horn. Again on November 8, another rhino was killed. This time forest officials and police arrested a person, though they refused to divulge his name.
