Concern over spurt in intellectuals

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 4 Expressing concern over the spurt in the number of intellectuals in the State, journalist and author Homen Bargohain on Wednesday said that a true intellectual had to have within him the ability to make detached observation and impartial analysis guided by logic and reasoning to unearth the truth.

Speaking at the formal release of the book Enekoiyo Ahe Juddha by Dhiman Talukdar and published by Panchajanya, Bargohain said that things had came to such a pass that persons who had written a letter to the editor were often being branded as intellectuals. Bargohain said that the word intellectual had become a clich to lose its original meaning.

The real intellectual is a dispassionate observer who engages himself in the pursuit of the truth through logic, reason, analysis, and independence of thought, he said, adding that Talukdar had been writing thought-provoking articles for quite some time.

Author Debabarta Das formally released the book. Filmmaker Altaf Majid and educationist Dr Khanin Choudhury were also present at the function.
