GUWAHATI, Nov 23 � The Assam Senior Citizens� Association (ASCA) has expressed serious concern over the prevailing moral degradation, corruption, indiscipline and communal feelings afflicting society, especially the younger section, during the recent years.
The association, at its meeting held in the city today under the presidentship of DN Chakravartty, also severely criticised the inept handling of the border situation both by the Government of India and the State Government, resulting in loss of lives and property of the Assamese people.
The association drew the attention of the Prime Minister to deploy the Army in the border area to protect the helpless border people who have for the last several years been the target of hooligans and depredators from Nagaland
Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, in his report, mentioned that the Government of Assam had issued circulars accepting the validity of identity cards issued by the ASCA for the purpose of availing senior citizens� concession in the State transport buses. The association decided to hold its first annual session at Barpeta Road on February 15 and 16, which would be attended by the Chief Minister as chief guest.
Tabiul Hussain, Jagat Chandra Bora, Naren Chandra Sarma, Mohan Burhagohaion, Bipul Bora, Binanda Gogoi, Dimbeswar Das and Suresh Saikia, while participating in the discussion, suggested bringing out a journal and expressed hope for getting affiliation from the All India Senior Citizens Council. A book Bichhuran by senior member Mohini Kumar Gogoi, was released by Chakravartty, who appreciated the contents of the volume.
