GUWAHATI, Jan 4 � The Assam Senior Citizens Association has expressed concern at the widespread indiscipline among the students in particular and the gross moral degradation among a large section of the youths which is evident in their addiction to drugs and also their proneness towards sexual violence.
The executive committee of the Association at its meeting held on Sunday in Guwahati under the presidentship of DN Chakravartty, called upon the Government of Assam to take early and planned steps for introduction of moral lessons in the high school level by devoting two periods together every month in which teachers, parents and local senior citizens should be involved to acquaint the students about the rich moral background of India and the urgency of keeping a disciplined life for attainment of success.
Member in charge of education of the Association Dr Dilip Borgohain while moving the resolution said that there are a large number of incidents where school students are found to be violent due to their addiction to drugs and alcohol. He stressed the need for introducing moral lessons in the school curriculum.
General secretary of the Association PK Mahanta in his annual report dwelt on the activities of the Association. Several members including Tabiul Hussain, Dr Harinarayan Borkotoky, Jagat Bora, Uttam Baruah, Bipul Bora and Dimbeswar Das while participating in the discussion, thanked the Chief Minister for granting 30 per cent concession to senior citizens for travelling in state transport buses. They also thanked the Chief Minister for enhancing the quantum of pension for the elder persons belonging to the BPL category.
The Association by a resolution urged the government to ensure that the minimum retail prices of medicines particularly for treatment of cancer should not be disproportionately higher than the wholesale prices.
The Association pointed out that some important drugs for treatment of cancer are sold at prices as high as Rs 11,000 in the retail shop while their wholesale prices are below Rs 4000.
