UDALGURI, June 29 - �We, the SC community of Assam too are indigenous community but the irony of situation today is that most of the family members of the community and even the Harijan people are harassed in the name of updation of the NRC.� This was the voice echoed in a sit-in demonstration of Udalguri district committee of All Assam Schedule Caste Students� Union (AASCSU) in association with the Udalguri district Harijan Sanmilani and BTC SC Students� Union here at DC Court premises in Udalguri on Thursday.

The organisations also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri district and a copy of the memorandum each was also sent to the Chief Minister of Assam, NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela, commissioner of SC Board and BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary. The memorandum put a nine-point charter of demands including a stop to harassment of the SC people who migrated to Assam before March 24,1971, declare the SC people as aboriginal community who came to Assam before March 24, 1971, provide a one-time government aid to the family of late Gopal Das of Tangla who committed suicide because of mental agony arising from NRC update process, allot plots of land to the landless SC people of the State, allot plots of land to the SC people in the tribal belts and blocks of the State, ensure equal development and rights to all the communities living in the BTC region, regularise the post-matric scholarships to SC students of the State, appoint Harijan candidates in the vacant sweepers posts in various departments under the BTC authority etc.
