GUWAHATI, June 17 - A complaint has been lodged with the Guwahati Police Commissioner over a reported incident of custodial violence at Gorchuk Police Station recently.

According to the complaint, one Krishna Mandal (43) was arrested by Gorchuk police on May 31 in connection with a car theft case at a workshop he is employed, on the basis of mere suspicion.

He was allegedly tortured physically at the police station, following which his health deteriorated and eventually he had to be admitted to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital.

We were told by doctors that he has sustained serious injuries to the head. He is on ventilation and his chances of survival are very thin, advocate Saurabh Nag, who is pursuing the case with the human rights commission and police accountability commission, said.

In a written representation to the Police Commissioner, the victims brother Gopal Mandal has sought stringent action against the police personnel involved as well as compensation to the family for the loss and mental agony.
