Compensation for flood-hit farmers sought

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, July 13 The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Kisan Morcha today demanded of the Government to provide a compensation of Rs 4000 per bigha, i.e Rs 10000 per acre for the flood-affected farmers in the State.

The party has also insisted on providing good quality seeds in areas where floodwaters have receded and arranging free of cost ploughing for small farmers in the State.

It needs to be mentioned here that BJP leaders have visited the various flood-affected areas of the State and trying to assess the impact of the recent flood on the farming community. A five-member delegation comprising the national vice president and former Cabinet minister in Jharkhand, Dr Rabindra Ray, national secretary Shiladitya Dev, national executive member and incharge Assam, RP Singh along with State Kisan Morcha vice president and treasurer, Rajani Das and Jogesh Kalita respectively have visited the flood-affected areas and interacted with the farmers.

The BJP Kisan Morcha leaders alleged that most of the flood-affected people were left on their own for the first 5-6 days of the flood.

The leaders further alleged that the State Government was not sincere in their approach towards the affected indigenous farmers and that all calculations made by the agriculture department are fictitious.

Dr Ray said that he will raise the issue of flood in the national executive of Kisan Morcha on July 21-22 at Chandigarh and then take up the matter with the Union Minister for Agriculture for proper support to the farmers.

Works under MGNREGA should be taken up in the affected areas. Projects like raised platforms should be developed in every village which are affected by floods so that flood affected people can take refuge in these areas. said Dr Ray adding that the farmers are in a panic and if concrete measures are not taken, they might be forced to commit suicide as it happens in most of the Congress ruled states.

Dev said that the government should convert the mud houses in the flood areas into RCC under the IAY scheme on priority basis.
