SILCHAR, Aug 1 - Reacting against the flurry of comments and protests against his statement on the percentage of good condition of National Highways connecting Barak Valley, PWD Minister Parimal Suklabaidya told the media on Monday that his comments have been misquoted.
I have never said that the roads are in good condition. I have only replied to the question placed in the floor of the Assembly that condition 87, 76.35 and 82 per cent of the national highways NH-6, NH-37 and NH-8 respectively are in moveable condition, he said.
When asked about what is the real story, Parimal said that Barak Valley has a total of 406 kms of National Highway. Out of 27 kms of Badarpur-Karimganj road, 23-km stretch is in bad shape. He pointed out that 5-km stretch of the 54 kms of Powamara-Churaibari road is in pathetic condition.
Our government is only two months old. But there is no lack of commitment. An estimated amount of Rs 2,000 crore has been proposed for the next three years of which Rs 600 crore will be utilised in the current financial year, the minister said.
