Cold weather conditions in NE to prevail for three more days

By AJIT PATOWARY

GUWAHATI, Dec 22 - The current cold weather conditions in the North East region are likely to last at least for the next three days, said sources in the Regional Meteorology Centre (RMC), Guwahati, on Sunday.

Sources attributed the present NE weather conditions to the prevalence of the easterly to the northeasterly wind in the lower atmosphere of the region. This wind is the product of the northeastward movement of a western disturbance system prevalent over North Pakistan and its adjoining Jammu and Kashmir, at a height between 3.1 km and 5.8 km above the mean sea level, the sources said.

This easterly to northeasterly wind has made the day (maximum) temperatures in the NE region to fall. However, remarkably, the night (minimum) temperatures in the region have not slid down significantly, sources said.

Guwahati today recorded a day temperature, which was 1.9 degree Celsius below its normal for the period, while Tezpur today recorded a day temperature, which was 5.8 degree Celsius below its normal for the period. Dhubri today recorded a day temperature, which was 5.7 degree Celsius below its normal for the period, while Silchar recorded a day temperature, which was 5.5 degree Celsius below its normal for the period.

Shillong today recorded a day temperature, which was 1.1 degree Celsius below its normal for the period. Agartala today recorded a day temperature, which was 3 degree Celsius below its normal for the period and Passighat today recorded a day temperature, which was 2.9 degree Celsius below its normal for the period, the sources said.

On the other hand, Meghalaya today recorded below normal night (minimum) temperatures (that is between 1.6 degree Celsius and 3 degree Celsius below normal) at isolated places. Manipur today recorded normal night temperatures (that is between 1.5 degree Celsius below normal and 1.5 degree Celsius above normal) at isolated places.

Assam today recorded above normal night temperatures (that is between 1.6 degree Celsius and 3 degree Celsius above normal) at most of its places and it recorded appreciably above normal night temperatures (that is between 3.1 degree Celsius and 5 degree Celsius above normal) at isolated places.

Tripura recorded above normal and appreciably above normal night temperatures at a few places, the sources said.
