CM�s stress to solve flood, erosion problems

GUWAHATI, May 22 � Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today laid stress on solving the problems of flood and erosion. Once these problems are solved, the health of the State�s economy will undergo a fundamental change, he said while inaugurating a seminar on low cost technology for mitigation of flood and river bank erosion in the river Brahmaputra at the Assam Secretariat auditorium here.

According to an official press release, the Chief Minister reiterated his Government�s emphasis on reclamation of the land lost to river bank erosion. For the purpose, the Government has gone for a pilot project at Sualkuchi.

The Chief Minister also informed the gathering of the function that national and international experts are sought to be engaged in the bid to control flood and check erosion through new technology. The Government is also keen on taking help of the countries like Bangladesh and Germany in this respect.

Addressing the function, organised jointly by the River Study Centre Flood and River Erosion Management Agency of Assam and the Water Resources Department of the State, Water Resources Minister Rajib Lochan Pegu said that the Government has taken up a pilot project for implementing the low-cost zack-zeety technology to check river bank erosion at Sualkuchi. The project is aimed at reclamation of the land lost to bank erosion.

He also informed that new technology would be introduced to channelise the Brahmaputra and thus to check erosion and reclaim the land eroded by the river.

The Government has set up an expert working group to study the nature of the Brahmaputra between Sadiya and Dhubri. The group will prepare a master plan, the Minister said.
