CM�s directive to solve city floods

GUWAHATI, Feb 15 � Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has directed the departments concerned to initiate more effective steps for solving the problem of artificial flood that cripples normal life in Guwahati during the rainy season.

The Chief Minister�s instruction came at a meeting he held with the senior officers of the Guwahati Development Department, Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority, Guwahati Municipal Corporation and the Kamrup (Metro) district administration to review the schemes of these agencies for the solution of the flash flood problem.

The meeting was held at the Chief Minister�s official residence last evening.

The Chief Minister asked the officers to clean and widen the Bharalu and Bahini rivers, to remove the waste materials deposited in the drains and wetlands of the city within the scheduled time frame. He also asked the district administration and the other departments connected with the development of the city to turn Guwahati into a clean city and for the purpose, he laid stress on urgent measures.

Gogoi also asked the officers to adopt an extensive and planned scheme for the development of the city. He further underlined the need of generating awareness among the Guwahatians to keep the city clean and called for a voluntary cleanliness drive.

The meeting was attended by GMDA chairman and MLA Capt Rabin Bordoloi, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister TY Das, GDD secretary Ashis Bhutani, GMDA Chief Executive Officer DR N Angamuthu, Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner Asutosh Agnihotri and GMC commissioner Puru Gupta, among other, said an official release.
