JORHAT, May 18 - The Secretary of the Chief Minister�s office Ranjan Chakraborty on Friday arrived in Majuli to take stock of the progress of projects related to development and infrastructure upgradation under way in the Brahmaputra island.
A Majuli district administration source stated that Chakraborty held a meeting at the Deputy Commissioner�s office at Garmur with heads of various Government departments and agencies involved in implementation of the projects and reviewed at length the status of the projects under way in the island under the supervision of the Government departments and agencies.
The source informed that Majuli Deputy Commissioner Debaprasad Misra, Additional Deputy Commissioner Chinmoy Nath, Superintendent of Police Hitesh Chandra Rai, senior officials of PWD (Rural Roads and Buildings), Water Resources, Panchayat and Rural Development, Health, Public Health Engineering, Brahmaputra Board, District Transport Office, Industries and Commerce, attended the review meeting.
The source said that Chakraborty asked the officials about any difficulty faced by them during the execution of the projects and asked them to apprise him of any problem they face. He directed the officials to closely monitor the works and see that quality was maintained and projects completed as per schedule.
Chakraborty collected data on the strength of manpower and infrastructure available in the offices of the various Government departments and agencies in Majuli and enquired whether the same was adequate for smooth functioning of the offices, the source stated.
The CMO Secretary further inspected site of construction of the new Deputy Commissioner�s office building at Garmur, built on the model of a mini-secretariat, which will house the offices of district heads of all departments and agencies of Majuli, the source stated.
The DC�s office will be an integrated centre for benefit of the citizens and for better coordination between the district administration and the departments and agencies, the source said.
Among the notable projects under way in Majuli, the constituency represented by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, are the quarters of officials and employees of the district administration, sports complex, police guest house and training centre for third and fourth grade employees.
Construction of several bridges and pucca roads too were in progress across the island, the source said.
It may be mentioned here that there have been a lot of complaints by people of the island against the poor quality of protection works to check large-scale erosion carried out by a private firm under the aegis of the Brahmaputra Board.
Following severe protests by villagers in the first week of this month at Bhakat Sapori area after large-scale irregularities were detected by local people in the works done by the private firm leading to failure to fulfil the objective, the Chairman of the Brahmaputra Board Rajiv Yadav on May 9 as per direction of Sonowal, visited Majuli to take stock of the situation.
Yadav announced of ordering a high-level inquiry to be conducted on the works done at Bhakat Sapori by a team from the Central Water Commission.
On May 12, Sonowal too visited the site where charges of inferior quality of work was said to be carried out and expressed his dissatisfaction. He warned that the Government will take stern action against those found involved in malafide activities in execution of the project.
