CM to hoist National Flag on Republic Day

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 23 Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi will hoist the National Flag and take salute of the parade on the occasion of Republic Day this year.

Normally, it is the Governor of the State, who hoists the National Flag in the central function of the State on the occasion of the Republic Day celebrations and the Chief Minister does so on Independence Day.

But as Assam does not have a permanent Governor after JB Patnaik completed his tenure and Nagaland Governor PB Acharya is only officiating as the acting Governor of the State, there was confusion over as to who will hoist the National Flag on the Republic Day. Acharya will hoist the National Flag in Kohima.

However, now it has been decided that the Chief Minister will hoist the National Flag in the function to be held in Guwahati. Official sources said that it is for the first time in Assam that the Chief Minister would hoist the National Flag on Republic Day. Sources also said that in some other States, Chief Ministers had hoisted National Flag on Republic Days in the past when Governors were not available.
