CM reviews updating of NRC

GUWAHATI, May 30 � Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today reviewed the updating of National Register of Citizens (NRC), 1951 with senior officials at his official residence here today, said an official press release.

In the meeting, Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla said the government was ready for updating the NRC 1951 and was awaiting approval of modalities by the Registrar General of India (RGI).

Commissioner and Secretary (Political) Prateek Hajela, who is the coordinator of NRC, apprised the Chief Minister that the office of the State Project Management Unit (SPMU) would be opened this month and two ACS officers would be manning it. Hajela informed the Chief Minister that the data collated would be digitalised. Hajela said the process for recruitment of district and field unit staff on contractual basis is on, together with engagement of a reputed consultant as per RGI guidelines. Moreover, Internet connectivity at Circle Offices would be completed soon.

The Chief Minister said he would personally write a letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh for according approval to the modalities by the RGI so that the timeline set for updating the NRC could be completed within 36 months.

The meeting was attended, among others, by Principal Secretary, Personnel, Rajib Kumar Bora, Commissioner and Secretary, Home and Political, GD Tripathi and Commissioner, Taxes, Dr JB Ekka.
