CM presses for fulfilling ST demands

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 25 - Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi observed that the sooner the Centre grants Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the six communities the better it is for the communities who have been pressing for this demand for long.

In a statement here today, Gogoi said, The State Government has all along been endorsing the demands of the six communities and has been providing all justifications in support of inclusion of the six communities without affecting the rights and privileges of the tribal communities.

He requested the Central Government to concede to the demands of the six communities soon, fulfilling all legal formalities. The six communities, namely Koch- Rajbongshis, Moran, Mattock, Chutiya, Tai Ahom and the tea tribe communities, which are currently listed as Other Backward Classes and are demanding to be included in the list of Scheduled Tribeswith the expectation that the new status would provide them more benefits.

The Chief Minister asserted that granting ST status to these communities should be backed by all legal validity.
