By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

DIBRUGARH, April 16 - In a unique social gathering organised on the occasion of Rongali Bihu at Dutta Mansion here today, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal received blessings from a cross-section of the people.

Representatives from various layers of society irrespective of faith, community and class like Safai Karmi Sanstha, Auto Drivers Union, fruit vendors and other traders were among the representatives, besidesmembers from the literary bodies, senior citizens, various religious leaders, institutional heads, college principals and organisation leaders in attendance for the social gathering. All the representatives participating in the gathering were welcomed with the traditional Assamese gamusas.

Impressed with the assorted gathering, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal described the assembly as a symbol of unity, brotherhood, tolerance and peace.

This is the kind of fellowship and unification our forefathers had strived for. We must promote it because such a co-existence is an asset to the society, which can bolster our efforts for a strong and prosperous Assam. If we can continue to live in this spirit, Dibrugarh can become a role model for the rest of the State for peace and progress. This spirit of love and understanding among all sections must also be passed on to the new generation, Sonowal observed.

The Chief Minister also took the opportunity to express pain on the rising incidents of crime against women and children in the country. Some anti-social and morally corrupt elements have become active across the country and are attacking not only the women, but also minors. It needs strong condemnation from all sections of the people. All of us are sons and daughters of a mother. If we do not have an iota of respect for women, we can never respect our mother. It is high time all of us must be awake and ensure that others are aware and alert about such criminal behaviour. We must thwart such hostile behaviour at all cost lest we lose all the inherited values, said Sonowal.

He also sought blessings from the gathering so that he could lead the people in the right direction as a torchbearer.

Eminent writer and litterateur Dr Nagen Saikia while extending his Bihu greetings and blessings to the Chief Minister said that the Government must feel the pulse of the people of the State. The Government must own the pains and suffering of the people and communicate it to the Centre accordingly. It must ensure that people do not lose faith in the Government and that people do not live in fear and anxiety under them, said Dr Saikia.

The gathering which lasted for about three hours also included tea party and Bihu dances. MPs and MLAs from Dibrugarh and Tinsukia also attended the gathering.
